A young professional from South Africa fell victim to a social media scam after encountering an advertisement on a popular social platform, claiming to offer exclusive investment opportunities in a new, high-growth business. The advertisement promised quick returns with minimal risk and included testimonials from “successful investors,” all of which seemed legitimate. Tempted by the potential profits, the victim clicked on the ad and was directed to a fake website where they could easily sign up and begin investing.
The scam operated by convincing the victim to make multiple payments into what appeared to be a genuine investment account. With each deposit, the victim was shown impressive returns on their online dashboard, which encouraged them to invest even more. However, when the victim tried to withdraw funds, the platform became unresponsive, and all communication with the “investment team” ceased. Realizing they had been scammed, the victim reached out to us for assistance.
We immediately launched an investigation, tracing the digital trail left by the scammers. Using forensic tools, we discovered that the website was hosted on an anonymous server, but we were able to trace the payment transactions to several bank accounts and cryptocurrency wallets.
